Electret masterbatch: a core innovation in the field of functional materials
Author:
Electret masterbatch is a functional material prepared using highly flowable polypropylene as the matrix, combined with composite electret‑functional additives—including organic or inorganic charge‑trapping agents. Its core value lies in imparting the material with long‑lasting electrostatic adsorption capability. In the production of meltblown nonwovens, adding 1%–5% electret masterbatch and subjecting the material to corona charging or hydroentangling processes enables a stable spatial charge distribution on the fiber surface, achieving a filtration efficiency of ≥95% for particles while maintaining low airflow resistance. This property makes it a critical raw material for protective products such as face masks and air purifiers, with market demand experiencing exponential growth, particularly in the wake of public health emergencies.
From a technical standpoint, the electret masterbatch creates a network of charge traps within the polymer matrix by means of charge‑capturing agents. By increasing both the density and depth of these charge‑capture energy wells in meltblown nonwovens, it effectively releases negative ions and stores electrical charges, thereby enhancing the overall filtration efficiency and thermal‑aging resistance of the material. As a result, at comparable fiber fineness and basis weight, the nonwoven product exhibits reduced flow resistance while simultaneously improving its filtration performance.
Currently, the electret masterbatch industry is undergoing technological advancement and industrial upgrading. Leading domestic companies such as Shandong Daon and Jinfafa Technology have already established production lines with capacities exceeding 10,000 tons, building robust technological barriers through “high melt index PP–electret additive synergy” and “fluorine-free, environmentally friendly formulations.” With increasingly stringent requirements for filtration efficiency and environmental performance under standards like GB 2626-2019 and EN 149, the electret masterbatch market is projected to expand at a compound annual growth rate of 12%, surpassing RMB 3 billion globally by 2030 and emerging as a key growth driver in the functional materials sector.
